The Good Pope

Shoes of the Fisherman

The Shoes of the Fisherman

based on the novel by Morris L West

Storyline of the movie

Ukrainian Archbishop Kiril Lakota (Anthony Quinn) is set free after twenty years as a political prisoner in Siberia. Before his imprsionment he was interrogated/"brainwashed" (as they called it in those days) by Piotr Ilyich Kamenev (Laurence Olivier) who has by now become Premier of the Soviet Union.

Kiril is brought to Rome by Father David Telemond (Oskar Werner), a troubled young priest (based loosely on Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, S.J.) whom Lakota befriends. Once at the Vatican, he is immediately given an audience with the Pope (John Gielgud), who elevates him to Cardinal Priest.

The world is on the brink of war due to a Chinese-Soviet feud made worse by a famine caused by trade restrictions brought against China by the U.S. When the Pontiff suddenly dies, Lakota's genuine character and unique life experience move the College of Cardinals to elect him as the new Pope.

But Pope Kiril I must now deal with his own self-doubt, the struggle of his friend Father Telemond, who is under scrutiny for his beliefs, and find a solution to the crisis in China. At the speech following his Coronation (now called Inaguration), Pope Kiril pledges to sell off the Church's wealth to help end the Chinese famine, and so avert the nuclear war that was about to happen.

A funny story by Toby Johnson

I'd read Shoes of the Fisherman by Morris L. West when the novel first was published in 1963. I was probably still in high school. I recall loving the novel. And then when the movie appeared in 1968, I saw it right off the bat, in fact, the day before it officially opened.

~ ~ ~

Last night (in 2024) we watched Shoes of the Fisherman on YouTube. I got to feeling affectionate for my Catholic upbringing. AND for good Pope Francis who seems very much like Pope Kiril in West's novel.

I was at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago with the Servites when Shoes of the Fisherman, the movie, came out. I remember going to a special showing for nuns and seminarians the day before it opened  to the public. There were 3 or 4 of us who went from CTU. I think we were the only boys in a packed theater of nuns—in 1968 all in full-dress habits. (We wore Roman collars so we could get in the door.)

I had had a memorable experience the night before. A friend from college, Paul DePalma, had come to Chicago for a visit and he and his girlfriend took me out to dinner at a Greek restaurant which Paul had heard was the best, but secret and understated, Greek restaurant in town. It was in the back of a Greek grocery store.

Anthony Quinn in 1970 While we were there, in came Anthony Quinn who was in Chicago for the grand opening of Shoes of the Fisherman along with two bodyguards and 2 hangers-on prostitutes who’d followed them into the cafe. The bodyguards kept trying to get the women to go away, but they kept coming back.

Zorba the Greek The store/café owner recognized Quinn as Zorba the Greek, and started playing the theme of that very famous film over the sound system. He came out and began dancing the Zorba dance, getting Quinn to join in a little at first. The waiters then brought out huge trays of all the food they had to offer and laid them out in front of Quinn/Zorba.

All the while the owner, dressed in a white apron with a chef’s toque on, danced around the table. After a while, he went back to the kitchen and then came out with a whole goat carcass which he held over his head as he jumped up on top of one of the tables to continue the dance. It went on and on.

We sat in the back corner, amazed and delighted. The meal was delicious, the experience delightful and memorable. I've loved Greek cuisine ever since.

And then the next day I went to see Anthony Quinn become Pope by proclamation and give away the riches of the Church to save starving Chinese and prevent nuclear war. Wonderful memories. Wonderful idea.

I recall that Paul VI — in similar fashion — gave away the Papal Tiara to raise money for charity. And the only person in the world who had the money or wanted to buy it was Cardinal Spellman and the Archdiocese of New York. Ah, the irony…

The truth is the Catholic Church is enormously wealthy in possessions, but msot of them aren't liquid. Who would buy the Pieta? Where would they put it? What developer would want St Peter's Basilica? What could you do with it?

~ ~ ~

The other irony, of course, was the fate of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, who’s portrayed in the movie as Fr Telemond whom Kiril has had to agree to the silencing of to satisfy his Cardinal advisors.

Teilhard de Chardin
Poor Père Teilhard (1881-1955). He died—on Easter morning, incidentally—thinking his work about the evolution of human consciousness toward oneness with God in "The Omega Point" had all been lost to the world.

It turns out 75 years later, he is probably the most famous and best name-recognized Catholic “theologian” in the world—and all helped to that acclaim by the Church’s condemnation.

You know, what the movie failed to include would have been Kiril’s secretly/subtly suggesting to Fr Telemond, after he silenced him, that if he couldn't be published by the Church he ought to seek outside publication (as, of course, happened in real life when friends of Teilhard's got his works published).
