"Aliens Settle in San Francisco" is this
week's headline of a grocery store tabloid called "Weekly World News"
which proclaims itself "The World's Only Reliable Newspaper."

This is also the week the new updated and expanded edition of Toby
Johnson's gay science fiction romance classic SECRET MATTER has been
released.
SECRET MATTER tells the
story of alien "Visitors" who arrive on Earth at the time a major
defense weapon system is about to be deployed that will create a "force
field" around the United States. The Visitors do not want that space
shield to go online.
But why?
That's only one of the secrets in SECRET MATTER. Another secret is just
why the Visitors chose San Francisco as the site for their embassy to
Earth.
Well, isn't it an interesting concidence--synchronicity--that the
"world's only reliable newspaper" ran a far-fetched story about aliens
settling in the City by the Bay at the same time Johnson's novel
appeared with that as a significant plot line.
The Visitors in SECRET MATTER are quite a bit more appealing and sexier
than the rubber chicken with a balloon head and a babyface that the
Photoshop artists at Weekly World News concocted.

The model for Toby Johnson as he was writing his
soft sci-fi gay romance novel with a whole new twist on what it means
to be gay was a photo from a calendar by noted gay men's photographer
Roy Blakey. Here's a Photoshop'd and souped-up version of Blakey's
image, showing another of the secrets in the plot. (Click on the photo
for a link to a retrospective book of Blakey's photographs.)
Secret Matter was first published in 1990. It won a Lammy for Gay Men's
Science Fiction. In 1999 it was one of five books nominated to be the
first title inducted into the Gaylaxian Science Fiction Hall of Fame.
Now, at the end of 2005, Lethe Press is bringing out a new updated,
revised, and expanded version of Toby Johnson's gay sci fi classic and
with an Afterword by Mark Jordan
about science fiction as a modern form of myth that is particularly
appealing to gay sensibilitites and queer worldview.
Secret Matter
is a
romantic comedy with an undercurrent of tension and suspense, a
lovable and unforgettable character, the right touch of science
fiction, and, as fans of Toby Johnson's will recognize, just the right
measure of mystical wisdom to make this a novel you'll thoroughly enjoy
and long
remember with a pang of fondness and pride.
A delightfully quirky spin
on what it means to be gay
Toby Johnson, PhD is
author of
eight books: three non-fiction books that apply the wisdom of his
teacher and "wise old man," Joseph Campbell to modern-day social and
religious problems, three gay genre novels that dramatize spiritual
issues at the heart of gay identity, and two books on gay men's
spiritualities and the mystical experience of homosexuality. In
addition to the novels featured
elsewhere in this web site, Johnson is author of IN SEARCH OF GOD IN
THE SEXUAL UNDERWORLD and THE MYTH OF
THE GREAT SECRET (Revised edition): AN APPRECIATION OF JOSEPH
CAMPBELL.
Johnson's Lammy Award winning book GAY
SPIRITUALITY: The Role of Gay Identity in the Transformation of
Human Consciousness was published in 2000.
His Lammy-nominated book GAY
PERSPECTIVE: Things Our Homosexuality Tells Us about the Nature
of God and the Universe was published by Alyson in 2003.
